Perennial Ryegrass
Developed from superior turf selections in Aurora, Oregon, Galileo
exhibits excellent winter disease resistance, very dark color
and very fine leaf texture. In private turf evaluation trials
conducted from 2001 through 2003 in Western Oregon, Galileo consistently
ranked at the very top of all varieties tested, surpassing many
commercially available named varieties in overall turf quality.
Galileo is widely adapted for use as both permanent turf in northern
climates and in overseeding in southern climates. In private independent
overseeding trials conducted during the 2004-2005 winter season
located in Arizona, Galileo performed at the very top of all varieties
tested. With excellent seedling vigor, rapid establishment and
a dense sward, Galileo tolerates low mowing heights for overseeding
applications and works very well as a single species turf in applications
where a perennial ryegrass permanent turf is desired.
Galileo is recommended for use in many different situations such
as golf courses, athletic fields, home lawns and other areas where
very dark, fine-textured perennial ryegrass turf is desired. Galileo
is also an excellent blending and mixing variety with other cool
season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue. It
has good shade tolerance and has shown to have strong wear tolerance
as well.
In addition the product was tested in informal plot trials in
the intensely hot weather of the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Galileo
excelled in these tests.
Galileo has shown to provide rapid establishment on par or above
many other top rated commercially available perennial ryegrass
varieties. It should be seeded at normal seeding rates for permanent
turf situations (5-10 lbs/1000 sq. ft.) and for southern golf
course overseeding (20-35lbs/1000 sq. ft.). Galileo also performs
best when fertilized with .5 lb to 1.0 lb of nitrogen per 1000
sq. ft. every month during the growing season. Mowing height should
be set from 1-2 inches, but can be lowered to both fairway and
putting green heights in golf course overseeding situations.
